The Pagan Heart of Today's Culture

"In spite of the political slogans of forward-looking hope and change, of beating back the forces of old-fashioned prejudice and tradition, many of the leading 'progressive' forces actually believer that the pagan past will save us. This postsecular mystical search for meaning in the nonrational is to be observed in the return to the modern world of the ancient religious system known as Gnosticism" -Peter Jones in The Pagan Heart of Today's Culture (we have free copies of this on our book rack)

Irony of ironies that so called God rejecting "progressives" are reverting back to paganism (where there were wait for it...worship of many false "gods" and "goddesses"). Indeed the expression goes, "When people cease to believe in God, they do not then believe in nothing, but in anything." (Émile Cammaerts, The Laughing Prophet: The Seven Virtues and G.K. Chesterton, p. 211 1937 summarizing G.K. Chesterton's views)

A few months ago I saw someone post a humorous meme that said "If paganism so much I suggest trying one of the most famous practices among pagans--converting to Christianity" Ha! Well played. Praise God for His kind grace and providential plan in bringing many of our viking ancestors and superstitious kin of old to true conversion, sound belief in and saving trust in the Lord Jesus Christ. And if you a first generation Christian praise God for his disruptions of your pride, folly, sin and shame that was en route to destruction, sin and death. This can produce anything but humble adoration and worship of our great God--the one true and living God Creator of heaven and earth who has saved graciously and freely in His Son:

For we also once were foolish ourselves, disobedient, deceived, enslaved to various lusts and pleasures, spending our life in malice and envy, hateful, hating one another. 4 But when the kindness of God our Savior and His love for mankind appeared, 5 He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit, 6 whom He poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 so that being justified by His grace we would be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life. (Titus 3:3-7)

Soli Deo Gloria!
