Thomas Watson's a Holy Antipathy Against Sin
From Your precepts I get understanding; Therefore I hate every false way. (Psalm 119:104)
The brethren of Grace Gems recently sent some excellent words from 17th century Pastor Thomas Watson (1620-1686) titled "A Holy Antipathy Against Sin!" You can read it here or listen to it here--it's only 5 minutes 38 seconds) For some regular (and free) encouragement you can read or listen to in a few minutes sign up for Grace Gems to get on their mailing list!
Here are a few choice quotes from Watson's "A Holy Antipathy Against Sin":
"There is no better sign of true repentance, than a holy antipathy against sin.Sound repentance begins in love to God, and ends in the hatred of sin."
"When a man's heart is set against sin. Not only does the tongue protest against sin, but the heart abhors it. However lovely sin is painted, we find it odious; just as we abhor the picture of one whom we mortally hate, even though it may be well drawn."
"Suppose a dish is finely cooked, yet if a man has an antipathy against the meat--he will not eat it. Just so, let the devil cook and dress sin with pleasure and profit--yet a true penitent . . .
has a secret abhorrence of it,
is disgusted by it, and will not meddle with it."
"A holy heart detests sin for its INTRINSIC POLLUTION. Sin leaves a stain upon the soul. A regenerate person abhors sin not only for the curse, but for the contagion. He hates this serpent not only for its sting, but for its poison. He hates sin not only for Hell, but as Hell."
"Those who have no antipathy against sin, are strangers to gospel repentance. Sin is in them, as poison in a serpent--which, being natural to it, affords delight. How far are they from repentance who, instead of hating sin, love sin!"
"To the godly, sin is as a thorn in the eye. To the wicked, sin is as a crown on the head! "They actually rejoice in doing evil!" Jeremiah 11:15."
Read or listen to rest of Thomas Watson's punchy, weighty reflections. It is worth your time. These are badly needed biblical truths in our compromised time when the professing church who name Christ so often look like the world. May the Lord bless our church family (and all true Christians) in our fight to put to death what is earthly in us and walk in the new self (Colossians 3). May we walk by the Spirit according to the Word under the Lord Jesus Christ knowing in Christ there is no condemnation (Romans 8:1) and Jesus Christ God the Son intercedes for us (1 John 2:1). Now from God's grace (grace=God's kind, free, unearned awesome favor towards undeserving sinners like us), we can live to glorify God. God the Father who has adopted us, God the Son who has purchased us with His own precious blood and God the Spirit who seals, guides and strengthens us will be with us to the very end from now into eternity. Sin has an expiration date upon it. It is an enemy bound for certain, final and total defeat. Soli Deo Gloria.
